What was once only a hobby for Keilah Jackson is now an internship.
At Joseph Ross Photography, Keilah is learning the ins and outs of photography, as well basics of marketing and promotion.
“The first part is behind the camera. I’ve been learning about all the camera settings. Things like adjusting aperture, shutter speed, and ISO to get the perfect exposure, inside and outside. Composition as well — how to frame the picture so it actually looks professional,” Keilah said.
The second part of the internship is marketing the photography business on social media and elsewhere.
Keilah has already done work for a client, going with a supervisor on a photo shoot in Chicago. Specifically tasked with taking photos of a specific train, Keilah adjusted camera settings and focused on getting the right composition for the image. She also used a trick she’d learned to make herself a “human tripod” by stiffening her arms to reduce camera shake.
“At the business, a client will tell them what kind of shot they want and then we go out and take it,” Keilah said, who’s interested in pursuing professional photography. “I definitely want to be behind the camera,” she said.
The coolest thing Keilah has done: The photo shoot in Chicago was Keilah’s first time doing work for a client.
